Gianluigi Buffon has announced his retirement from football at the age of 45.

Buffon has decided to terminate his contract with Italian side Parma after a hugely successful 28-year career.

In 2001, he became the most expensive goalkeeper in the world when he joined Juventus from Parma for €52m.

In the summer of 2018, Buffon signed for PSG on a free transfer from Juventus but only spent a year with Les Parisiens.

Most Serie A appearances

Buffon played 685 times for Italian giants Juventus, winning 22 major trophies along the way. He also retires having made more Serie A appearances (648) than any other player in history.

World Cup glory came when the shot-stopper helped Italy lift the most-coveted trophy in world football in 2006. Buffon went on to win a record 176 caps for his country.
