FIFA president Gianni Infantino will stand unopposed to be re-elected for a third term in the position.

The 52-year-old became head of football’s governing body when he was first elected in February 2016, succeeding Sepp Blatter.

FIFA released a statement on Thursday that confirmed there was only one candidate for next year’s presidential election.

“Following the call for election issued by the FIFA Council on 30 March 2022, FIFA’s member associations have proposed, in due time and form, the following candidate for the presidential election due to take place at the 73rd FIFA Congress in Kigali, Rwanda, on 16 March 2023:

  • Mr Gianni Infantino (incumbent FIFA President)
  • No other candidature has been submitted.”

As reported by journalist Rob Harris, Infantino has been backed by over 50 European nations for another term as FIFA president.
