Giménez scores as Feyenoord thump Shakhtar in Europa League
Mexican striker Santiago Giménez continued his fine form for Feyenoord this season, scoring the first goal as the Dutchmen swept into the Europa League quarter-finals.
It’s no secret that Santiago Giménez is one of Mexico’s stand-out strikers right now. The Argentina-born player is excelling for Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord, scoring goals in every competition the Rotterdam club are involved in.
Giménez opens scoring as Shakhtar hit for seven
On Thursday, the 21-year-old set his side on their way to a thumping second-leg win in the Europa League last 16, as Arne Slot’s men secured a quarter-final berth by beating Shakhtar Donetsk 7-1 at De Kuip.
Receiving the ball on the edge of the Shakhtar area in the ninth minute, Giménez beat two defenders before firing a fine left-footed shot low into the net past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.
The goal was the former Cruz Azul man’s 14th for Feyenoord in 33 appearances in all competitions this season.
Orkun Kökcü and Oussama Idrissi then scored a brace each, with Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Danilo also on target, as Feyenoord clinched an overwhelming, 8-2 aggregate victory.
Feyenoord to find out quarter-final opponents on Friday
The two-time UEFA Cup/Europa League winners will now take their place in Friday’s last-eight draw, which takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, at 8am ET.
