Finally, some good news for the USMNT. After U.S. midfielder Gio Reyna suffered a groin injury while training with the national team during the last international break, in which he was unable to participate and missed the matches against Canada and New Zealand, there is now what appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

So far this season, Reyna has only featured on the pitch for a grand total of nine minutes. He played for Borussia Dortmund in the first game of the season before being left on the bench the week after; for the remaining three games he was unable to make the squad due to the aforementioned groin strain picked up stateside.

As a result of this physical issue, Reyna has been out of action since September 11, but the positive news for US fans is that he is back in training with his club side. Added to this are the hopeful words from his manager, Nuri Sahin, who spoke about the winger in his most recent press conference.

Reyna ‘on the right track’ and close to USMNT return

The Dortmund coach assured that the latest update regarding Reyna is encouraging and he could in fact return in just a couple of weeks: “Gio Reyna is on the right track”, Sahin said, “he might be able to play before the international break,” said the coach.

The Black & Yellow have not had the best start to the domestic campaign, winning just 2 of their 4 games in the Bundesliga. They have lost one and drawn another, and sit around mid-table with 7 points from a possible 12. On the continent in the Champions League, their sole match so far ended positively, in a 0-3 away win over Club Brugge, a game they should expect to win.

Last season, Gio Reyna spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The American is not in the picture for BVB for the September 27 match against Bochum, but if he recovers as expected, he could be ready for the USMNT’s friendly matches against Panama and Mexico, which will mark Mauricio Pochettino’s debut on the bench of the Stars and Stripes.

These matches are scheduled for October. The first against Panama will be played on October 12 at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas at 9:00 pm ET; the second will take place in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico on October 15 at Estadio Akron at 10:30 pm ET.
