Good news for Pumas: Star forward is here to stay
J.J. Macías, who is currently recovering from a serious injury, is reportedly poised to extend his Pumas contract.
After weeks of speculation suggesting there was no chance of an agreement between José Juan Macías and Pumas UNAM, it now appears the latest round of talks ended on a positive note - and a contract extension is closer than ever.
From injury setbacks to renewed optimism
Following the severe injury he suffered against Cruz Azul—three separate ruptures—and a grueling recovery process, rumors swirled that J.J. had resisted undergoing surgery in Mexico. That reportedly didn’t sit well with Pumas, leading the club to consider walking away from a renewal. However, the latest updates tell a very different story.
As was hinted immediately after the injury, Pumas are expected to exercise the option that secures Macías’ future with the club, and the official announcement could be imminent. According to César Luis Merlo, an agreement for the extension is in place, meaning JJ will remain a Pumas player for the foreseeable future.
How long will Macías extend for?
While details haven’t been disclosed, the expectation is that the deal will add one more year, with an option for another extension if certain performance targets are met.

When will Macías return?
It’s worth noting that Macías’ recovery is projected to take roughly eight more months, which effectively rules him out for the Clausura 2026. His return likely won’t come until after the World Cup.
