Griezmann to LAFC: “we know there have been talks”
Giroud, LAFC’s star striker, has admitted that there has been contact between the club and Antoine Griezmann.
MLS is still in the middle of a search to find its newest diamond, and Antoine Griezmann’s name stands out on the star-studded list. The attacker is in the twilight era of his career, with his retirement from the French National Team seen as one of the steps that brings him closer to the end.
Griezmann is playing out his final few seasons in Madrid, and from Los Angeles, Olivier Giroud has confirmed to Téléfoot that the wheels are in motion in getting him stateside.
Griezmann to LAFC ‘would be great’
“We know there have already been talks, it would be great to meet with Hugo (Lloris), the three of us, in Los Angeles,” the LAFC attacker told the French outlet. Griezmann’s contract with Atlético Madrid runs until June 2026, when he will be 35-years-old. While the Frenchman still wants to squeeze out his final minutes at the highest level in a city where he is seen as an idol, the attacker’s future is very much tied to MLS.
“Winning LaLiga and the Champions League would be a dream and is my goal. We have another World Cup in Qatar and after that, MLS,” Griezmann even commented when he was a Barcelona player. The MLS door has been open for some time, and he even referred to his future last summer.
“It makes you excited, it makes you dream, but I’m at Atlético Madrid, I’m happy and I hope to achieve something next year with a trophy. We have time to think about MLS,” he said in the run-up to the Euros.
Griezmann’s departure next January seems impossible. The Frenchman is still in full swing, this season he already has three goals and five assists, numbers that make him the player who has been most involved in front of goal. For both Cholo and the fans he is indispensable piece in the rojiblanco machine. His release clause, just €15 million, is a small fee for the vast majority of clubs, but Griezmann, for the moment, only thinks about the red and white shirt.
