When Club América fired Santiago Solari as head coach, the team was in last place in the standings and had a long road ahead of them to make a playoff push. Fernando Ortíz was appointed as the interim head coach and he has turned things around for Club América in a short period of time.

América always a contender to win the title

With the scoreless draw against Cruz Azul on Saturday night, the Eagles are now in fourth place with 26 points and a record of seven wins, five draws and five losses. They were one point away from third place Atlas in the standings in the Liga MX but they have secured a spot in the playoffs.

After the game against Cruz Azul América goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa admitted that they are a top contender always to win the title even though they had a bad start to the season. “It was an incredible effort from everyone, when things were not going our way and we were fighting for a wildcard spot,” said Ochoa during an interview with TUDN.

What we did from going from last place to fourth is unbelievable, but we have not accomplished anything yet. This team will fight for the title and this team has shown character in a tournament that is so short,” added Ochoa. The Eagles will know their rivals in the playoffs after the conclusion of the Wildcard games next week.
