The World Cup added another chapter to its rich history in Monterrey. Japan’s 4-0 victory over Tunisia was not only a convincing win for the Asian side, but also the 1,000th match played in World Cup history since the tournament’s inception in Uruguay in 1930, a milestone FIFA chose to commemorate in a special way.

To mark the occasion, both teams took the field wearing a commemorative patch created exclusively for the match. The emblem featured the number “1000” alongside World Cup-themed graphic elements, recognising a landmark moment nearly a century in the making. Displayed on the shirts of both Japan and Tunisia, the badge served as a lasting reminder that they were part of a unique occasion in the tournament’s history.

FIFA had announced weeks earlier that the Group F fixture would become the 1,000th World Cup match, making it one of the symbolic moments of the 2026 tournament. As a result, Monterrey, one of the Mexican host cities, is now permanently linked to this historic statistical milestone in international football.

While the commemorative patch drew attention before kick-off, the action on the pitch ultimately gave the occasion even greater significance. Japan produced a dominant display, defeating Tunisia 4-0 to secure a victory that will forever be associated with this landmark date. The result ensured that Japan became the winner of the 1,000th World Cup match, a distinction that will remain in the competition’s records for years to come.

From the first World Cup match in 1930 to this edition hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada, the tournament has now reached a figure reserved for the world’s greatest sporting events. And at the Steel Giant, amid a special celebration and four Japanese goals, football added yet another memorable page to its history.
