The storm has hit Club América: the departure of Fernando Ortíz as manager of Club América comes after the tough elimination in the semi-finals of the Liguilla del Clausura 2023 against Chivas, meaning speculation has started to swirl overhead about who could take his place. The team’s board of directors, led by Santiago Baños, has already begun the search for a new coach and the club already have some preferred names in mind.

According to information confirmed by AS, Gustavo Alfaro, the 60-year-old Argentine coach, who led the Ecuadorian National Team during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has been proposed to the Club América authorities. However, until now, the club has not taken a final decision regarding a potential move for the coach.

Alfaro has an impressively long resumé

In 2020, he took the role of the Ecuadorian National Team manager, which was his first experience in charge of a national team. Under his guidance, Ecuador managed to qualify for the World Cup, after their absence in Russia 2018, with an outstanding show of skill and talent in the South American qualifiers. In the World Cup, they failed to advance from the first round after losing to Senegal (1-2), drawing against the Netherlands and beating Qatar in the opening match (2-0).

The Argentine coach also has a lot of experience at various clubs across the world. In 2009, he managed Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia. During that same year, he had the opportunity to take over at Boca Juniors, with which he became champion. Alfaro has gone through plenty teams in Argentina: Atlético Rafaela, Patronato de Paraná, Quilmes, Belgrano de Córdoba, Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, San Lorenzo, Rosario Central, Tigre, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Huracán and Arsenal de Sarandí, the club he led to win the 2007 Copa Sudamericana, curiously by defeating ‘Las Águilas’ in the final.
