Gustavo Leal appointed new Atlético San Luis coach

The San Luis-based outfit was forced to find a new coach for the Apertura 2023 following André Jardine’s departure.

With André Jarine’s departure to América, Atlético San Luis directors found themselves forced to find a new coach with just a few days to go before the start of the Apertura 2023. On Tuesday, the club completed the signing of Gustavo Leal, who will take charge of the rojiblancos for the upcoming tournament.

Atlético San Luis announced the new through their official media platforms, and uploaded a video to welcome the 36-year-old Brazilian coach - the second youngest coach in the Liga MX after Eduardo Arce, 34, who is in charge at Puebla.

Who is Gustavo Leal?

His coaching career began in 2014 with Fluminense‘s Under-17s, where he stayed until 2017, when he made the leap to Europe. In the old continent, he had a short spell in Slovakia with STK Samorin but left after having managed 13 games.

Later he returned with ‘Flu’ to take command of the Under-20 side but once again, his time at the helm was short-lived, as André Jardine invited him to coach Brazil’s Under-23s - with whom he won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Months later, he accompanied Jardine on his adventure with Atlético San Luis and was an assistant in the last tournaments with the Potosinos.

I had the opportunity to stay where I was or go to América. I was in no doubt when I made my decision, I am delighted to be with this club. It’s a great challenge, the biggest of my career. I am very happy and calm about my decision. I am grateful to the board of directors because it is a club where I feel very good with the players,” he said.
