Luis Enrique announced his 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday and Sergio Ramos was not included in it. One of the most vocal on Ramos’ omission from the squad has been his PSG team-mate Achraf Hakimi, a player he has an excellent relationship with. The defensive pair signed for PSG in the summer of 2021 and the right-back publicly showed his support for the Andalusian defender on Twitter, calling him the best defender in the world.

“Sergio Ramos, the best defender in the world,” reads the tweet posted by the Morocco international. The former Real Madrid player is himself going to the World Cup with Morocco later this month and has become a key player for PSG over the last year and a half. Ramos, who was on Luis Enrique’s 55-man pre-World Cup squad list, could have been one of the surprises in the La Roja squad, but was not included in the list drawn up by the Asturian coach.

Ramos’ last chance

Ramos’ PSG manager, Christophe Galtier, admitted ahead of the French side’s game against Auxerre on Sunday that some players were happy to have been called up for the World Cup and others were disappointed. Ramos’ fine form this season had opened up the possibility of a return to the national team having put his injury issues to one side, and establishing himself as a first-choice starter at centre-back for PSG. In 2026 he will be 40, meaning this was his last shot at another World Cup.
