Harry Kane reveals that he met with Daniel Levy after Newcastle debacle
The England captain said that he had had an “honest conversation” with the Spurs chairman on Monday.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has revealed that he met with the club’s under-fire chairman, Daniel Levy, in the aftermath of the chastening 6-1 loss away at Newcastle United last Sunday.
Kane became the club’s all-time record goal scorer earlier this season and has continued to impress despite Spurs’ struggles.
After they managed a second half comeback to draw 2-2 against Manchester United on Thursday, Kane said that he had met with Levy on Monday to discuss the club’s path forward.
“The chairman asked for a meeting,” the England captain said. “Obviously I won’t go into what was said but I think it was important [for him] to understand where the players’ heads were at in that moment.”
Kane explained: “It was an honest conversation of where everyone is at and what we need to try to do to give us the best possible chance to finish the season with something.”
Spurs still aiming for Champions League
Tottenham Hotspur went two goals down to Manchester United in the first half on Thursday and the halftime whistle was greeted with boos in the Spurs stadium. But the home side rallied after the break and picked up an important point against United.
After the game Kane said that the second half performance had showed that Spurs could still finish in the Champions League qualifying spots.
“We’re still fighting for fourth place but if it’s not fourth we’ll try to finish fifth or sixth, as high up as we can,” Kane said.
“In this league, it’s so competitive, you can easily end up eighth or ninth if you’re not careful. That’s what it was – to give us the best chance and I’m glad we reacted like that.”
During the match Manchester United fans chanted ‘We’ll see you in June’ towards Kane, referencing rumours of a proposed transfer. Kane’s contract is up in the summer of 2024 and he is not thought to be close to agreeing an extension.
“I heard what they were saying,” Kane said of the chant. “But I’m just focused on this team and trying to finish [the season] strongly.”
Kane would prefer to stay at Spurs but needs to know that there is a clear path forward for the team. Levy is under pressure to get the managerial situation sorted as soon as possible, or he risks losing the club’s talisman.
