Little over a week after a thrilling finale to the 2024 season, ten MLS teams are already looking ahead to next year’s action. The first round draw for the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup takes place in Miami on Tuesday night with 27 teams vying to take home the championship.

The first round draw includes 22 of those teams, with five regional winners progressing straight to the round of 16. The MLS contingent for this year’s tournament is Columbus Crew, LAFC, Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City, Inter Miami, Vancouver Whitecaps, LA Galaxy, FC Cincinnati, Real Salt Lake and the Seattle Sounders.

The competition was first introduced in 1962 and has been dominated by Mexican sides throughout that time. However there have also been wins for teams from Suriname, Haiti and Guatemala, as well as a select group of MLS clubs.

Over the course of the competition’s 59-year history the only American teams to be crowned continental champions are DC United (1998), LA Galaxy (2000) and Seattle Sounders (2022).

The Seattle team that lifted the trophy in 2022 remains fairly similar to the team that made it to the Western Conference Final in 2024, built around the spine of Stefan Frei, Cristian Roldan, Albert Rusnak and Jordan Morris. Experienced head coach Brian Schmetzer is still in charge and he’ll be relishing the opportunity to replicate that historic 2022 triumph.

The connection to the fans and the players is the spirit of this club,” Schmetzer said back in 2022, when 68,761 supporters crammed into Lumen Field for the second leg of the final. “And you guys heard it. When the teams walked out tonight, that was awesome. It was really awesome. You guys felt the energy in the building. The players felt it. It was spectacular.”
