On Sunday in New Jersey, Spain won the World Cup for the second time, defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a controversial final settled by Ferran Torres’ goal.

Few would debate that La Roja were deserved winners on Sunday, and their overall triumph saw several Spanish players rewarded by FIFA during the postgame celebrations.

Spain’s stars sweep the major awards

Given Spain conceded just one goal, against Belgium in the quarterfinals, across eight games, it came as little surprise that three defensive-minded players received individual awards.

2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, who anchored Spain’s midfield superbly throughout the tournament, collected the biggest prize, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.

First introduced in 1982, the Manchester City midfielder joins legendary names such as Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane in winning the award.

Goalkeeper Unai Simón, who set a tournament record with seven clean sheets and holds the World Cup record for the most consecutive minutes without conceding a goal (650), collected the Golden Glove Award.

Nineteen-year-old Pau Cubarsí, who formed a formidable partnership with Aymeric Laporte in central defense, won the FIFA Young Player Award.

Mbappé tops the scoring charts

The only non-Spanish winner of an individual award was Kylian Mbappé, whose two goals for France in the third-place match ensured he finished clear of Lionel Messi on 10 goals to claim the Golden Boot.

The Argentina captain finished the tournament not only as a runner-up with his team, but also second in two individual categories, receiving both the Silver Ball and the Silver Boot.

Mbappé also collected the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s third-best player, while England’s Jude Bellingham took the Bronze Boot thanks to his goal in the third-place match.

Finally, the Netherlands received the FIFA Fair Play Trophy, awarded to the team with the best disciplinary record among those that reached the knockout stage.
