Update:

FC Barcelona has confirmed that teenage star Lamine Yamal has suffered a re-occurrence of a groin injury, ruling him out for “two to three weeks.”

The injury was first reported during the September international break with the Spanish national team. He missed four games as a result and returned for last Sunday’s victory over Real Sociedad. He was fit enough to start in the Champions League game against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday but the problem has now flared up again.

The groin problem for Lamine Yamal has returned following the game against PSG,” the Spanish club said. “The player will miss [Sunday’s] game against Sevilla and his recovery time is estimated at 2-3 weeks.”

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has previous criticized the national team setup for failing to protect Yamal. Still only 18 years old, Yamal finished second in Ballon d’Or voting last week and he is now in his fourth season with the Barcelona first team.

“Spain, they have the best team in the world, best players in the world,” Flick said. “So, maybe they will also want to take care of our players, our young players, but it’s like they are doing this [to them].”

Yamal will miss Spain’s two World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria next week. He should be fit soon after the return to domestic duty and Flick will hope that he can count on the young star for the trip to Real Madrid on October 26.
