The quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup start tonight from Nashville as one of the youngest clubs of the MLS hosts one of the most storied clubs in Liga MX. It’s Nashville SC hosting Club America from GEODIS Park.

Nashville SC

In just their second ever appearance in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Nashville SC are looking to make a statement and they grabbed the headline of the Round of 16 after beating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. Now they take one of the giants in the competition looking to stun the soccer world for a second straight round.

Nashville joined the MLS in 2020, and have yet to really make their mark in the league. The highest they have finished is 7th in the league, and they have made it to the quarterfinals in their first couple of seasons but have not been past the round of eight in the MLS. They have qualified for this tournament just once before, and they were knocked out in the Round of 16, but are in the midst of the longest run in the CCC, and looking to stun one of the most storied clubs on the continent.

After beating Atletico Ottawa in a 7-0 aggregate after two legs, Brian Callaghan’s men set their sights on Inter Miami and their stacked squad who had prioritized this tournament coming into the campaign. After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, it was Cristian Espinoza who cancelled out Lio Messi’s 900th goal and Nashville ended up taking the tiebreak thanks to the away goals rule to advance to the quarters.

Club America

The most storied club in Mexican football is looking to take one step closer to what would be a historic eighth CCC title this season, but they have to get past a tough Nashville side that opened up a few eyes last round with their win over Inter Miami. The road to the quarters hasn’t been an easy one for America, but Andre Jardine’s men have experience in this tournament and look to use it against a novice Nashville side.

America have seven CCC titles, which makes them the winningest club joined with fellow Mexican club Cruz Azul. They won their first title in 1977, and since then they have won six more, but have been on a decade long title drought that they will be hoping to end this season. They were runners up in 2021, but can take one step closer to their record eighth if they get past Nashville in the quarters.

They were paired up with CD Olimpia in the first round, and they struggled to get past the humble side from Honduras with a 2-1 aggregate. That set them up with a date against the Philadelphia Union in the round of 16 and again it was America getting past Philadelphia with a 2-1 aggregate after a 1-0 win in Philadelphia it was Rodrigo Dourado’s goal that made the difference in the second leg as Las Aguilas secured a 1-1 draw and booked their ticket to the quarters.
