Update:

This year’s Premier League title is in Arsenal’s hands. Monday night’s victory over Burnley leaves the Gunners five points clear with one game left to play, and while Manchester City still have a game in hand, Guardiola’s men now need the leaders to lose or draw Sunday’s game against Crystal Palace if they are to snatch the title on the final day of the season.

And the Gunners also have the chance to bag a league and cup double. They will face PSG in the Champions League final on May 30. Ending the season as champions of Europe will be a much tougher feat, but not impossible.

Wenger’s historic double-winning side

All in all, it’s a unique situation for Arsenal although the club has won the Double on three occasions: 1970–71, 1997–98 and 2001–02. The most recent team that clinched the league and FA Cup in the same season is generally considered to be the greatest Arsenal side of all-time. Dubbed the Invincibles, Arsène Wenger’s Gunners featured players who lit up the league - Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Freddie Ljungberg, Dennis Bergkamp...

That Arsenal side gained their nickname for finishing as champions without losing a single game: 26 wins and 12 draws. However, one club legend believes that the current team will go down in history and outstrip Wenger’s unbeatable 2001–02 side if they are crowned English and European champions.

I would put them above the Invincibles simple because this team has got the capability of being invincible in the Champions League and to win the Premier League as well,” Wright told Sky Sports. “As great as that Invincible team was and the individuals they had, this team will surpass them with what they’ve done because they will have done something that not even that great team did. They will need to get a lot of credit for that for what they’ve been through and the journey under this manager.

“They’re obviously playing a really good PSG side and it will be a battle of styles but they have got themselves there and they deserve to be there,” the former striker continued. “They’ve built this squad and got the players on the bench to help finish games. They’ve done it all up until this point. If they can finish it off, which I’m praying they can, of course they have to go down as Arsenal’s best team in history”.
