USMNT under suspicion at World Cup after Balogun suspension controversy: “It absolutely stinks”
Belgium and pundits across Europe question FIFA’s decision amid talk of outside influence as Balogun debate intensifies at the World Cup.

There is growing controversy at the 2026 World Cup after FIFA reversed a one-match suspension for USMNT star striker Folarin Balogun, triggering strong reactions across Europe and beyond.
The decision has stunned opponents, pundits, and former players alike, with questions now swirling over fairness, consistency, and possible outside influence.
Belgium reacts with disbelief
USMNT’s next opponents, Belgium, were first to publicly react.
The Royal Belgian Football Association have released a statement following FIFA's decision to allow the USA's Folarin Balogun to play on Monday despite picking up a red card in his team's Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/iN2jK9tJ4f

“I didn’t know that in the World Cup and at FIFA, July 5 is actually April 1. It’s April Fools’ Day,” Belgium coach Rudi Garcia said. “We are not defending the national team or the federation, we are defending football and its integrity.”
The comments reflected a sense of frustration over what Belgium views as an inconsistent disciplinary decision on the eve of a major match.
Premier League legends weigh in
Reaction in England was equally sharp during a broadcast debate on UK broadcaster ITV.
Roy Keane did not hold back, calling the decision unfair and suggesting favoritism was at play.
“It seems unfair because it is unfair. It seems like a bit of a pals’ act, shall we say,” said Keane.
Gary Neville went even further.
“It absolutely stinks. And do you know something, are we surprised? No, not with this lot,” he said.
Former England striker Ian Wright also expressed concern over broader issues in the tournament.
“Some of the things that’s happened in this World Cup have been shameful,” Wright said.
British media personality Piers Morgan also weighed in, warning that the incident could define the tournament.
“This will be the biggest, and potentially most scandalous, story of the World Cup,” he said.

Klopp questions reported political influence
In Germany, former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp was asked about reports suggesting Donald Trump may have contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino regarding the red card review involving the USMNT forward.
Klopp was blunt in his response.
“If that really happened, then it is madness,” Klopp said. “Let’s just say this: this is our game, not theirs. These two people, who have no idea about football, should not be involved.”
He added that, in his view, the original decision was correct.
“That was a red card. No debate. We feel for Balogun because there was no intent, but those are the rules,” Klopp said.
France raises concerns over precedent
In France, the decision also sparked debate about possible broader implications.
On the program hosted by journalist Daniel Riolo, concerns were raised about perceived influence on the ruling.
“The influence of Donald Trump in this decision is too significant,” one commentator said. “If it had been Lukaku, Doku, or De Bruyne, would the red card have been overturned against the United States?”
The discussion concluded with concern that the perception of the USMNT could now be affected for the rest of the tournament.
“Now the United States will not be viewed the same way in this World Cup. There will be suspicion in every match,” the panel added.
