How Man City can ruin Arsenal’s Premier League dream: Results needed to extend the Gunners’ 22-year drought
Just two rounds of games remain in the Premier League as part of the 2025/26 campaign with Arsenal inches away from glory.
Plenty of water has passed under the bridge since the last time the Premier League title was awarded to Arsenal FC. The ‘Invincibles’ side under French coach Arsene Wenger became the first and only team in the modern Premier League era to go an entire 38-game campaign without a single defeat (26 wins and 12 draws).
Five FA Cup and Community Shield wins have been of scant consolation for the ‘Gunners’ fanbase who have seen many ‘near misses’ in the past two decades and now, with just two rounds of games to go, the Londoners control their own destiny to bag the 25/26 Premier League title.
Do Arsenal have the ‘bottle’?
The current Premier League title race is a razor-thin battle between Arsenal and Manchester City. Arsenal are currently sitting on 79 points with two games remaining, while Manchester City have 74 points but have a game in hand (three games remaining).
Arsenal control their own fate, two wins for Arteta’s side secures the title irrespective of how City perform, however a slip-up for the Gunners and that’s when things get interesting.
Crystal Palace hold the key to Premier League outcome
Manchester City’s path to the title is simple: Win all games and hope for an Arsenal slip-up.
City can reach a maximum of 83 points, whereas Arsenal can reach 85 points.
The Arsenal Stumble: Arsenal faces a relegated Burnley next. While expected to win, any slip-up (a draw or loss) hands the advantage entirely to City. If Arsenal lose to Burnley, City only needs 6 points from their final 9 to likely overtake them on goal difference.
Goal Difference: Currently, Arsenal has a +2 goal difference advantage. However, City typically are freescoring during the run-in. If both teams finish level on points, City’s ability to put 4 or 5 goals past teams like Everton or Leicester could ruin Arsenal’s dream on the final day.
City’s first part of their aim to dent Arsenal from winning the title comes on Wednesday evening as they entertain a Crystal Palace side already clear of relegation and with one eye on their forthcoming UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27.
A win over the ‘Eagles’ would maintain pressure on the North Londoners ahead of matchday 37 and 38.
City’s final two league games are away to Bournemouth and home to Villa with Arsenal at home to already relegated and away to face Palace.
