PREMIER LEAGUE

How many American players are playing in the 2024/25 Premier League?

One USMNT star will feature in the opening game between Manchester United and Fulham. There have been mixed Premier League fortunes for the others.

The 2024/25 Premier League season kicks off on Friday, August 16, with Manchester United taking on Fulham in the opening game (kickoff at 3pm ET). And the clash at Old Trafford should feature USMNT defender Antonee Robinson, one of four - potentially five - Americans who are starting the English top-flight campaign.

Robinson’s fifth Premier League season with Fulham

The left-back, who was born and bred in England but qualifies to play for the United States through his father, is going into his fifth season with Fulham, all but one of which have come in the Premier League.

Robinson has made 151 appearances and scored three goals for The Cottagers, playing 37 times in the league last season, missing only the home win over Luton Town on matchday five. The former Everton youth team player was relegated from the Premier League in his first season with Fulham in 2020/21 but helped them bounce back at the first attempt by winning the Championship the following year.

Bournemouth’s Adams to miss start of Premier League season

USMNT captain Tyler Adams is gearing up for his third season in the Premier League and his second with Bournemouth. The New York native will be hoping this campaign goes better than the last one, almost all of which he missed through injury. The 25-year-old made just three appearances for The Cherries, playing only 118 minutes.

Unfortunately for Adams, his fitness woes continue. After the US were eliminated from the 2024 Copa América, the midfielder underwent back surgery, which is expected to keep him out for several months.

Richards becomes first choice for Crystal Palace

Chris Richards, however, is expected to star for Crystal Palace after establishing himself as a first choice in central defence last season. Having started 2023/24 on the bench, the Alabamian featured 26 times in the Premier League, starting 23 of The Eagles’ last 26 fixtures.

He also scored his first goal in the competition in a 3-0 home win over Burnley in February. Palace won six of their last seven games to finish in 12th, and will be hoping to kick on under Oliver Glasner, who was appointed in midway through the season.

Turner drops out of Nottingham Forest team

Finally, Matt Turner had a mixed time with Nottingham Forest last year, it’s fair to say. The New Jersey-born goalkeeper started the first 10 Premier League games until a high-profile mistake against Liverpool saw him drop out of the team.

He was brought back in for seven matches either side of Christmas and New Year but lost his place for a second time, with his last appearance coming on January 30. He did, however, play two FA Cup ties after that.

Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler’s United States link

Those are the four Americans who could see some game time in the Premier League as it stands, although Alex Borto, another goalkeeper from New Jersey, plays for Fulham’s development team and the 20-year-old will be hoping to force his way into the first-team picture.

New Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler offers another link to the United States, as he was born in Houston, Texas to a Swiss father and German mother. The family moved back to Germany when he was two years old, although he does have American citizenship.

When do the Americans play their first Premier League games this season?

As mentioned, Robinson’s - and Borto’s - Fulham are playing in the first 2024/25 Premier League fixture away to Manchester United on Friday (August 16, 3pm ET). On Saturday (August 17 at 10am ET), Turner’s Nottingham Forest face Adams’ Bournemouth, although the former is likely to be on the bench at best, and the latter is unavailable for selection. Richards is expected to make his first appearance of the new season on Sunday (August 18), when Crystal Palace visit Brentford (9am ET).
