The new Champions League format is coming to a close, and PSG and Inter will face off in the final on May 31, 2025, at 3 p.m. ET (9 p.m. local). A total of 36 teams began the competition at the start of the season, but only two remain on the brink of continental glory. The Ligue 1 winners and the Serie A runners-up will go head-to-head at the Munich Football Arena in Germany.

This will be the fifth time Munich has hosted a Champions League final – and every previous edition has delivered something unprecedented: a victory for a club that had never before won the European Cup. In 1979, it was Nottingham Forest; in 1993, Olympique de Marseille; in 1997, Borussia Dortmund; and in 2012, Chelsea.

PSG have not had the best luck in the competition, while Inter have experienced both triumph and heartbreak in Europe. Under Simone Inzaghi, the Italian side has reached six Champions League finals, with a perfectly split record – three wins and three defeats.

Their first taste of a European final came in 1964, back when the tournament wasn’t even called the Champions League. Their opponent? None other than Real Madrid, who had won the first five editions of the European Cup in a row. At Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion, the Italians sealed a 3–1 victory with goals from Mazzola (43’, 76’) and Milani (61’), while Real’s Felo managed to pull one back in the 70th minute.

Inter repeated the feat in 1965, this time on home turf at San Siro in Milan, defeating Benfica – who had already lifted the trophy twice. Jair’s strike in the 43rd minute crowned the Nerazzurri back-to-back champions and earned them a new nickname: the continental giant-killers.

The Italians developed a taste for finals and were back again in 1967. From the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon, Inter – this time as the away side – took on Celtic, who played their hand right to the end. Mazzola opened the scoring for Inter in the 7th minute, but Gemmell (63’) and Chalmers (84’) turned the game around to give the Scots a 2–1 win just before the final whistle.

It took another five years for Inter to reach a final. In 1972, Johan Cruyff’s Ajax crushed their dreams of redemption after the loss to Celtic. At De Kuip in Rotterdam, Cruyff struck twice in quick succession – in the 47th and 48th minutes – to seal a 2–0 win and deny Inter once more.

Italian fans had to wait more than five years for another shot at European glory – in fact, they waited 38 years, or 13,880 days. In 2010, at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter were the last teams standing. But Inter had waited far too long to let the chance slip by. Diego Milito took charge, scoring in the 35th and 70th minutes to secure a 2–0 win – and the club’s third, and most recent, European title.

The last time Inter made it to the final was in 2023, against Manchester City. That time, it wasn’t to be. After knocking out their eternal rivals Milan in the semifinals, the Italian side traveled to the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul to face the English champions. But Rodri’s 68th-minute strike decided the game – a 1–0 victory that handed Pep Guardiola’s team their first Champions League trophy.
