On 10 June, Manchester City will take on Inter in the 2022-23 Champions League final after beating reigning champions Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

It will be Manchester City’s second ever Champions League final, and they will be favourites to lift the trophy over Simone Inzaghi’s side.

City’s first final came in 2021 when they were defeated by Premier League rivals Chelsea with German forward Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the game in what was the third all-English final in the competition.

City are the ninth English club to have appeared in a European Cup final, which is more than any other country.

In 2021, they became the third newcomer in successive seasons after Tottenham in 2019 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2020.

City’s best previous performance in the Champions League prior to the 2021 final had come in the 2015-16 edition, when they lost in the semi-finals to that year’s eventual champions Real Madrid, going down 1-0 on aggregate.

Inter return 13 years later

This year’s showpiece event will be Inter’s first since 2010, when they won the competition with José Mourinho in the dugout.

The Nerazzurri have lifted the Champions League on three occasions and they will be hoping to stop City from lifting their first next month.
