The English Premier League is the envy of domestic competitions the world over. Big name signings flood into the 20 clubs that battle it out year in, year out for the prestigious title and fans pour into the glamorous stadiums across the country come rain, wind or, more occasionally, shine. The teams in the 2023/24 season come from as far north as Newcastle and stretch all the way down to Bournemouth and Brighton on the south coast. In between there are the hugely successful cities of Manchester and Liverpool, the past European giants of Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, and of course the clubs based in the capital London.

This iconic city boasts the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs, but several more, less globally known clubs lie within, and they all have to play each other.

What other London clubs are there?

As well as those capital teams currently playing in the top division in England, there are others who have either previously reached the elite level, or could do in the future. Here’s a list of other teams in the lower leagues based in London:

  • Charlton Athletic

League Two:

  • Wealdstone

That makes it a total of 17 clubs from the English capital.

What are the names of the biggest London derbies?

Over time, some of the London derbies have grown more intense rivalries than others. Take the North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, for example, a rivalry dating back to 1913. The Gunners lead in that head-to-head. Then there’s the North West London derby which features Chelsea against both Arsenal and Tottenham respectively.

The Dockers derby, between Millwall and West Ham United, is marked by a deep-seated rivalry originating from their roots in the dockworking community. In the East London derby, West Ham, Leyton Orient, and Dagenham & Redbridge compete, although these matches are less frequent due to the teams often playing in different leagues. The South London derby primarily involves Crystal Palace, with their main rivals being Charlton Athletic and Millwall.

In West London, Chelsea faces local rivals like Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, with a historical edge over both. Additionally, Fulham and QPR share a long-standing rivalry, having first played in 1892. The rivalry between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United is also worth a mention, stemming from hooliganism in the 1980s but now focused more on footballing competition.

These derbies represent a significant aspect of London’s rich football culture and a great chance for any visitors to the city to attend a game live.
