Update:

Anthony Gordon has secured membership to a select club of Champions League goal scorers, by netting four times as Newcastle United romped to a huge first-leg lead over Qarabag on Wednesday.

Magpies make hay in Baku

All four of Gordon’s goals came in the first half in Baku, where Newcastle were 5-0 up at halftime of the teams’ knockout-round playoff clash. After the break, Eddie Howe’s men completed a 6-1 thumping to place one foot in the Champions League last 16.

Gordon set Newcastle on their way with a third-minute opener, before Malick Thiaw added a quickfire second for the visitors. Gordon later netted twice from the spot - in the 32nd and 46th minute - either side of a 33rd-minute strike to complete his hat-trick.

Qarabag’s Elvin Jafarguliyev reduced the deficit early in the second half at the Azersun Arena, but Jacob Murphy restored the Magpies’ five-goal advantage with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Newcastle now host Qarabag in the second leg at St. James’ Park on Tuesday, Feb. 24 (3:00 p.m. ET)

How many players have hit four in a single UCL game?

Gordon’s goal glut against Qarabag makes the Englishman the 20th player to score at least four times in a single men’s Champions League game.

What’s more, the 24-year-old is only the second man in the Champions League era to hit four goals in the first half of a single game, per Opta. That had not occurred since October 2014, when Luiz Adriano netted a first-period foursome in Shakhtar Donetsk’s 7-0 win over BATE Borisov.

Adriano finished that Shakhtar shellacking with five goals, having added a second-half penalty; it’s one of only three occasions on which a player has scored a quintet of strikes in a Champions League matchup.

Gordon emulates England captain

In addition to adding his name to a historic list of four-goal Champions League performances, Gordon has become only the second English player to reach double figures in a single season in the competition.

With 10 goals now to his name in the Champions League this term, the Everton youth product has followed in the footsteps of Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, who bagged 11 goals for the Bundesliga giants in 2024/25.

Gordon’s 2025/26 tally leaves him second in this season’s Champions League goal charts, behind Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, who has netted 13 times for Los Blancos.

This season’s UCL top scorers:

  • 1. Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid: 13
  • 2. Anthony Gordon, Newcastle United: 10
  • 3. Harry Kane, Bayern Munich: 8
  • 4. Erling Haaland, Manchester City: 7
  • 5=. Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal: 6
  • 5=. Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray: 6
