How many Premier League goals has Haaland scored against ‘big six’ clubs?
It wasn’t Haaland’s day against Chelsea at the Etihad, but the Norwegian has an impressive record against the Premier League’s top teams.
Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm since joining from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, winning the league title with Manchester City in his first year in England and setting the record for the most goals scored by a player in a single Premier League season.
How many goals did Haaland score in 2022-23?
The Norwegian striker bagged 36 times in only 35 appearances in the English top flight in 2022-23, in which he scored an astonishing 52 goals in 53 games in all competitions. And he has also made a fast start to the latest campaign under Pep Guardiola, although he hasn’t quite hit the heights of 12 months ago.
The 23 year old has twice failed to score in four successive matches for City - unthinkable last term - and has been hampered by a foot injury which caused him to miss a number of fixtures either side of the New Year. Yet he has stiill managed 21 goals in 27 games in all competitions and 16 in 19 in the Premier League, tallies most strikers would kill for.
Which ‘big six’ club does Haaland have the best record against?
City rivals Manchester United have been the forward’s favourite victims since he arrived in England. Haaland has scored five goals and provided three assists in 6-3 and 3-0 wins over the Red Devils, who did manage to keep him quiet as the won the second derby of the season in 2022-23.
The Norwegian’s two goals and two assists against Arsenal in two Premier League games last term went a long way to helping Pep Guardiola’s men clinch a fifth league title in six seasons, although he was fairly anonymous in the 1-0 defeat to the Gunners at the Emirates in October.
Chelsea and Liverpool become Haaland’s latest top-six victims
Until this season, Haaland had failed to find the net against both Chelsea and Liverpool, which he has rectified. After Saturday’s draw against The Blues, the former Dortmund attacker hasn’t scored in three of his four appearances against them, although he did net twice, and lay on another goal, in the 4-4 game at Stamford Bridge in November.
Haaland has only ever lined up against Jürgen Klopp’s side twice in the Premier League and has yet to taste victory (a 1-0 defeat at Anfield and a 1-1 draw at the Etihad). However, he did open his account against The Reds when the teams met towards the end of last year.
City just about remain favourites to defend their Premier League title but are now four points behind leaders Liverpool and two behind second-placed Arsenal, both of whom have played an extra game. Guardiola’s men travel to Anfield on 10 March and host The Gunners on 31 March.
