We’re edging ever closer to the highly-anticipated Women’s Soccer World Cup 2023, which takes place from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand. There are still three teams required to give us our full complement for the tournament -- more on how that works below -- but the nations in five of the eight groups know exactly what opposition lies ahead.

How many teams are in Women’s World Cup 2023?

To complete our eight groups of four we need to whittle down 10 teams to three. That triumphant trio joins those 29 that have already qualified to play in the FIFA tournament this summer giving our total of 32. Groups D, E and F await that news more than most.

2023 Women’s World Cup: the qualified teams

The 29 teams qualified for Australia and New Zealand are already assigned to their respective groups and know their match schedule with only three opponents still needed to complete the picture.

  • Group A: New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Switzerland
  • Group B: Australia, Ireland, Nigeria, Canada
  • Group C: Spain, Costa Rica, Zambia, Japan
  • Group D: England, Denmark, China, TBC
  • Group E: United States, Vietnam, the Netherlands, TBC
  • Group F: France, Jamaica, Brazil, TBC
  • Group G: Sweden, South Africa, Italy, Argentina
  • Group H: Germany, Morocco, Colombia, the Czech Republic

2023 Women’s World Cup: the playoffs explained

A total of ten teams, from six different continents, compete for the coveted last three places available to play in the Women’s World Cup. They are: Cameroon, Portugal, Thailand, Chile, Senegal, Haiti, Chinese Taipei, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Panama.

These playoffs, in the form of mini qualifying tournaments will be between February 18-23, taking place in New Zealand. The chosen stadiums are Waikato (Hamilton/Kirikiriroa) and North Harbor Stadium (Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau).

The ten teams in the playoffs are divided into three groups:

Group A: Portugal, Cameroon and Thailand

Group B: Chile, Haiti and Senegal

Group C: Chinese Taipei, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Panama

Cameroon will face Thailand for the right to play Portugal in the Group A final, while Chile will wait for the winner of the Senegal-Haiti in Group B. In Group C, the winners of the duels between Chinese Taipei-Paraguay and Papua New Guinea-Panama will meet for a ticket to the World Cup.
