How many times has Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup?

So, the final of the Spanish Super Cup will be Real Madrid against Barcelona, just as everybody wanted. Especially the half-full stadiums. Los Blancos will take on the blaugrana on Sunday 15 January at 8pm Spanish time, 2pm ET and 11am PT.

And whoever comes out victorious as the champions of the Super Cup will either achieve a new height or draw level at the top with the record holders. The Spanish Super Cup has seen some changes over recent years, some more successful than others. The ‘Final Four’ format is definitely a plus, and has added a genuine sense of competition to what always felt like the last of the pre-season friendlies when it was held at the end of summer. Moving the competition to Saudi Arabia, however, is not such a fantastic change.

How did the two teams get to the final?

Barcelona made it past Real Betis on Thursday via the penalty spot, a shootout which came at the end of a thrilling 2-2 draw after extra time, with goals from Loren Morón and Ansu coming in extra time to take the tie all the way. Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was the hero at the end of the game, saving 2 of the Real Betis shots, allowing Pedri to score the all important 4th goal. “He’s a match-winning goalkeeper. I’m delighted with the way he’s performed since I’ve been here”, Xavi said after the match regarding ter Stegen. It’s hard to disagree.

Real Madrid defeated Valencia in the other semi-final, which also went all the way to penalties. Valencia grew into the game and made it a tough test for Ancelotti’s side, who performed their typical magic trick of lying down in the magic box, being cut in two by a huge saw and coming out on the other side. “It was a complicated game, a night of suffering”, Ancelotti said after the match, and one can’t help but get the feeling that the Italian is not as calm as his on-camera persona appears to be.

Real Madrid team news

Lucas Vázquez is making a trip to the injury room after suffering an ankle sprain: he will be out for over a month, adding to the headache Ancelotti already has with the defensive issues that are sticking around like a bad smell. The word going round is that youngster Vinicius Tobias from Castilla will be promoted in order to help cover the gap left by Lucas.

Eduardo Camavinga has a knock and is a doubt, although his injury is not seen as one that will keep him out for long (if at all) and he was even able to take part in training. Éder Militão left the field early against Valencia after taking a ball in the face but also completed the training session.

Aurélien Tchouaméni and David Alaba are not fit and did not travel to Saudi Arabia, as told on Tuesday.

What is Real Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup record?

So, I said that one team will either pull away or close the gap and, unfortunately for them, Madrid falls into the latter of the two. Barcelona currently lead the way with 13 Super Cup wins but Madrid sit on their coat tails with 12; their most recent success came last year against Athletic Club. Two years ago it was played in Spain due to COVID-19 but things were rushed right back to Riyadh the following season and Madrid swept up the award, beating the Basque side 0-2.

Madrid’s Spanish Super Cup record is as follows: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2008, 2012, 2017, 2020, 2022.

  • The Spanish Super Cup will be available to follow live on AS USA.
