Club América’s 1-0 win over Atlético San Luis on Wednesday means they are guaranteed to finish the regular Liga MX season as “super leaders”, in first place in the standings, ahead of the Apertura 2023 playoffs getting underway. Las Águilas have already achieved the feat nine times but will be hoping not to have peaked to soon, which has happened on a number of occasions in the past.

Henry Martín struck the only goal of the game at Estadio Alfonso Lastras, securing a sixth successive league win for André Jardine’s team and taking them onto 36 points from 15 games. With two matchdays left to play, nearest challengers Tigres and Monterrey can only get to 34 and 35 points respectively.

Nine years ago, América only just pipped Tigres and Atlas to top spot and sneaked past Pumas in the playoff quarter-finals. They then convincing saw off Monterrey in the last four before overturning a first-leg deficit against the Auriazules in the final.
