CARABAO CUP
How many times have Liverpool won the Carabao Cup?
Virgil van Dijk scored the only goal late in extra time as Jürgen Klopp’s side once again beat Chelsea at Wembley.
Liverpool have won the 2023-24 Carabao Cup, defeating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley in extra time. Virgil van Dijk, who had earlier had a goal disallowed, headed in the only goal of the game in the 118th minute. The Reds, who are top of the Premier League, could win four trophies this season, with the Champions League and the FA Cup also in their list of objectives.
Depleted Reds strike late to beat Chelsea
Despite missing a number of first-team stars, including Mohamed Salah, Darwin Núñez, Alisson and Trent-Alexander Arnold, Jürgen Klopp’s youthful side emerged victorious in London after van Dijk directed Kostas Tsimikas’ right-wing corner past Blues keeper Djordje Petrovic with only two minutes of extra time to play.
The Reds already held the record for number of victories in the Carabao Cup (also known as the League Cup and the EFL Cup), a competition which has gone through a number of name changes as a result of its title sponsorship.
Klopp’s Liverpool extend record number of Carabao Cup wins
Klopp won the trophy two seasons ago in 2021-22, when Liverpool also defeated Chelsea in the final at Wembley, prevailing in a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw. This year’s showpiece had looked set to be decided from the spot until van Dijk’s late intervention.
The Reds have won the tournament 10 times in total, with their victories coming in the following seasons: 1980–81, 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1994–95, 2000–01, 2002–03, 2011–12, 2021–22 and 2023-24.
Manchester City, who have won the Carabao Cup six times since 2013-14 are second on the list with eight victories, followed by Manchester United, last season’s winners, on six. Aston Villa and Chelsea complete the top five with five triumphs apiece.
