The U.S. president Donald Trump, will attend the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday, according to confirmation from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. His appearance is set to become one of the tournament’s most significant political moments.
Trump will travel to New York for a FIFA event at Trump Tower before heading to MetLife Stadium for the championship match between Argentina and Spain.
Will Trump present the World Cup to the winner?
While no official announcement has been made, Trump is widely expected to take part in the trophy presentation ceremony. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has previously indicated that the two will present the trophy to the winning team, in keeping with the tradition of major international tournaments.
The presence of political leaders at World Cup finals is nothing new. At Qatar 2022, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani took part in the postmatch ceremony, while Russian president Vladimir Putin was involved in the medal presentation during the 2018 World Cup final.
Trump was also a prominent figure at the FIFA Club World Cup last summer, when he presented the trophy to Chelsea. The moment drew widespread attention when he remained on the podium during the team’s celebrations, even standing alongside captain Reece James, prompting considerable media discussion.
