Lionel Messi is just one trophy away from becoming the most decorated player in the history of soccer. As it stands, he has won 43 trophies - one behind the record holder, his old Barça team mate Dani Alves. Victory in Saturday’s Leagues Cup final would pull Messi level with the Brazilian and it would almost be a landmark occasion for the franchise. The Argentinean is about to play just his seventh game with Inter Miami and already has the chance to add another registry to his honors list…

… and to Inter Miami’s. The Florida-based team has never won any major competition, trophy or even an unofficial preseason tournament. Their trophy cabinet is completely bare - for now. That is hardly surprising considering that the franchise is still a relative newcomer on the scene.

MLS newcomers

As a soccer franchise, Inter Miami is barely five years old. It was founded by the the Miami Beckham United group in January 2018. Two years later it was named as one of the two expansion teams to be launched in Major League Soccer - the other being Nashville SC - curiously, the team that they will contest their first trophy with this weekend.

Inter Miami have completed three MLS seasons since making their league debut against Los Angeles FC on 1 March 2020. Their leap to the big time wasn’t helped by the fact that it coincided with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic with their games played inside empty stadiums. The team ended their debut season in 10th place in the Eastern Conference - just creeping in as one of the five teams to qualify for the play-in round. That was where their campaign came to an end as they lost their tie 3-0 to guess who? Nashville.

The following year, Inter ended the regular season in 11th place so just missed out on the playoffs. In 2022, the team posted their best figures - 6th in the Eastern Conference to qualify directly for the first round of the playoffs. But once again, the knockout stage proved a bridge too far and they were eliminated by New York City FC in their first match.

This season the team is bottom of the Eastern Conference table with just 18 points - five wins in 22 games. Miami are at 12 points’ distance from the last playoff place with 12 games left to play but bearing in mind they have won all of their last six games in the Leagues Cups and with Messi firing on all cylinders, anything can happen between now and when the regular season wraps up on 22 October.
