Los Angeles FC and the Columbus Crew met again. Little under a year ago, the two teams contested the MLS Cup and this weekend they are back to scrap it out for the Leagues Cup - the tournament that pits MLS teams against their counterparts from Mexico’s Liga MX.

Rewind eight months to 9 December 2023 and that MLS Cup final played at Lower.com Field, Columbus, Ohio - the same venue that will host tomorrow’s League Cup clash; first half goals from Cucho Hernández and Yaw Yeboah were enough to see the Crew come home with the trophy. Denis Bouanga’s late consolation being too little, too late for Los Angeles.

Columbus Crew's titles

MLS Cup: 2008, 2020, 2023

US Open Cup: 2002

Supporters' Shield: 2004, 2008, 2009

Now Columbus have the chance to adorn their trophy cabinet with another cup and underline the great merit which Wilfried Nancy has shown to get them into another final.

Sunday’s contest will be the team’s third final in less than eight months. The Crew is used to taking center stage in all of the tournaments it enters and this test will be fundamental to demonstrate their strength against Mexican clubs as well as their MLS rivals.

The Crew lost 3-0 to Pachuca in the Concacaf Champions Cup final back in June, so Sunday’s clash against LAFC is an opportunity to make amends. Since its foundation in 1994, the Crew has won seven titles and is looking to claim its eighth.

Columbus Crew’s achievements

The Crew has three MLS Cup titles and finished as runners-up in 2015 (losing the final 1-2 to the Portland Timbers). The franchise has been awarded the Supporters’ Shield three times - the trophy is given to the MLS team with the best regular season record. The Black and Gold picked up 49 points in 2004, 57 in 2008 and 49 in 2009.

They also have one US Open Cup to their name - .which they won in October 2002, beating the Los Angeles Galaxy 0-1 in front of their own fans.

And they‘ve been crowned conference playoff champions on four occasions (2008, 2015, 2020 and 2023). If victorious on Sunday, the Leagues Cup would be their first international title.
