Two clubs which have become fan favorites over the last few years meet in Yankee Stadium as Liverpool take on Wrexham in a preseason friendly.
There’s nothing like a mid summer classic at Yankee Stadium, but this year’s spectacle in the Big Apple is going to have a little different taste to it. No, we aren’t talking about the MLB All-Star game, or even baseball in general, we are talking about soccer. Liverpool and Wrexham at Yankee Stadium.
Two fan favorites touchdown in NY
The United States is still buzzing after the World Cup, and soccer fever is more prevalent than ever in this country. While there won’t be as many giant clubs going on U.S. preseason tours this summer, two of the most popular English clubs in this country are coming to New York for a friendly in one of the most popular stadiums in the world.
Liverpool has made their mark in this country ever since english soccer started gaining ground here in the US. The illustrious club has been growing in popularity abroad, and make a special point of spending time in the U.S. during the preseason. That is aided by the fact that the club is owned are by Fenway Sports Group, the same group that owns the Boston Red Sox.
Wrexham has garnered plenty of attention and fandom over the last few years thanks to their A-list owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. They bought the Welsh club back in 2020 and have taken it all the way to the brink of the Premier League. A documentary brought this little known club into the living rooms of die hards, and casual soccer fans alike, all the while climbing up the soccer ladder, from the fifth division in 2020, to just missing out on promotion to the Premiership last year.
It’s a mouthwatering preseason matchup for American soccer fans, and the fact that it will be held at Yankee Stadium makes this friendly even more irresistible. Kickoff is set for July 29th at 7:30 p.m. ET. Good news for fans looking for a ticket, these are much more affordable than any of those World Cup tickets that were available over the last couple months.
Not as bad as World Cup prices
The cheapest tickets, according to Ticketmaster, are set at $76.80. Those are located right behind where home plate would be on a normal day at Yankee Stadium. If you are looking to splash a little more cash, the most expensive tickets on the website are going for just over $500 for this preseason friendly.
Liverpool are fresh off a disappointing season that saw their star of the last decade part ways with the club. Mohamed Salah is gone, in large part because of a rift with former manager Arne Slot that grew over the final few months of the season. Slot was fired, and replaced with Andoni Iraola, who led Bournemouth to a sixth placed finish last season, the best in club history.
In their first year in the Championship, the Welsh club finished with 71 points, and ended the season in 7th place and just missed out on a playoff spot. They finished two spots behind Hull City who ended up winning the playoff and joining Coventry City and Ipswich Town as the sides that were promoted to the Premier League for this campaign.
