The 2023 Club World Cup is just around the corner, and Club León secured its participation in the tournament by winning the CONCACAF Champions League against LAFC, led by Carlos Vela. As is customary, Mexico tends to have a presence in the international competition, and this will mark the first time the club from the largest city in Guanajuato will face other regional champions, who, based on financial value of the squads, several should not pose an overly challenging hurdle.

According to Transfermarkt, and as is to be expected, UEFA’s Champions League-winning Manchester City is by far the team with the greatest economic strength in the tournament. Following them, with a considerable drop, is Al-Ittihad, which will play as the host team and boasts players such as Karim Benzema, Fabinho, and N’Golo Kanté. Fluminense from Brazil, recently crowned in the Copa Libertadores against Boca Juniors, completes the top 3 of the most valuable clubs.

León occupies the fourth position, followed by El-Ahly Cairo, Urawa Red Diamonds from Japan, and Auckland City from New Zealand. This will be the last occasion the tournament is played in this format. In 2025, the number of participants will increase to 32, and the tournament will be held in the United States. Money, as we see more and more, talks.
