Barcelona had the idea of starting their US Summer tour against Italian side Juventus, but a breakout of gastroenteritis put their plans on hold, costing the Spanish side millions of dollars from gate receipts at the huge Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco.

How much did Barcelona lose from the cancellation?

Barcelona’s statement said: ‘Barcelona hereby informs that the game against Juventus FC, scheduled for today, July 22 at 7:30 PM at Levi’s Stadium, as part of the Soccer Champions Tour, has been canceled. A significant part of the blaugrana squad has a viral gastroenteritis’.

At least 60,000 tickets had been sold for the clash, with prices ranging from $60 to $500. The Catalan club were in line to take a percentage of the money and the estimated earning - now losses due to the cancellation - sit at around $2 million - $3 million.

Barça wanted to change the date of the game and play the tie on July 24, however, the organisers were unable to arrange a new date given that there is a pair of upcoming Taylor Swift concerts on July 28 and 29.

With the idea of not letting the virus spread and with all the focus on playing the match against Arsenal on July 26 in Los Angeles, Barça have isolated the players who have been affected by the illness and they have started wearing masks in a million-dollar saving operation.

Barcelona encourage fans to attend game vs Arsenal

In another statement, the club said: FC Barcelona would like to encourage its fans to attend and enjoy the game we are going to play this Wednesday against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Both teams are in close contact and we both have the utmost confidence that our game will go on as planned.

There are three more games planned stateside for Los Culés, a name which has taken on a new meaning since the virus broke out. They will play against Arsenal, Real Madrid and AC Milan before the tour concludes.
