Real Madrid has a special relationship with the Champions League and in terms of victories, Carlo Ancelotti is the club’s most successful coach in the tournament. Out of the 62 games he has overseen as Madrid boss, his teams have won all but 17 (eight draws, nine defeats). Tonight in London, Carletto will equal Zinedine Zidane’s club record of three European crowns - if his team beats Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

It’s mind-boggling to think that Ancelotti was actually sacked by Madrid two years into his first tenure. Fortunately for both parties they could let bygones be bygones. Any bad feeling or misunderstanding was all water under the bridge by the time Ancelotti, then at Everton, called his old club to find out of any players might be available. When Florentino Pérez mentioned that Zidane was leaving and the club was searching for a replacement, Carlo joked that he would love a second crack of the whip.

He’s perfect for Real Madrid - tactically astute, vastly experienced, excellent at handling the press and most importantly of all, he oozes calm. Ancelotti never gets flustered or loses his patience and his gentle nature and good humor rubs off on his players, giving them a serenity which helps them when the pressure’s on.

Ancelotti’s salary at Real Madrid

Madrid re-hired Ancelotti as Zizou’s successor in June 2021, the coach signing a three-year contract. A clause written into that contract stated that if the club were to sack him at any point during those three years, Ancelotti would be paid what he is owed in wages for the remainder of that season plus another year in compensation. It is believed that Ancelotti was earning around 11 million euros a year before tax under the terms of the contract he signed in June 2021.

That works out at a gross monthly salary of €916,666.67 or €211,538.46 per week although Carlo will take home significantly less than that after tax.

In December 2023, Carlo and Madrid reached an agreement to extend the Italian coach’s contract by two years. His current contract is set to expire on 30 June 2026. Details of the new contract haven’t been disclosed although it’s highly likely that Ancelotti would have received a pay rise. When he completes his contract, Ancelotti will be 67 and able to collect his pension. During his pre-match press conference ahead of tonight’s Champions League final, he revealed that Madrid will be his last club: “I’ll retire as Real Madrid coach,” he told reporters. “My career will end here at Real Madrid”
