How much will it cost Bayern Munich to sack Julian Nagelsmann?

Bayern Munich’s recent run of results in the Bundesliga, culmitating in a 1-0 defeat away at Augsburg to cap a run of four games without a win, has set a few unwanted records for the German champions. The game at Augsburg was the first in 87 Bundesliga fixtures where Bayern have failed to score, and it has been 20 years since the Bavarian giants have gone four games without a win in the league. Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is at the moment not in apparent danger of losing his job, the international break providing a chance for a reset at the club. Of course, dismissing Nagelsmann is also not something that come cheap for the Allianz Arena hierarchy, who paid Leipzig a record €25m for his services last year.

Thomas Tuchel, who coached Nagelsmann at Augsburg in the 2007-08 season, is out of work having been sacked by Chelsea and has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga with Bayern should Nagelsmann be jettisoned.

Nagelsmann’s compensation clause

According to German sports daily Bild, the club included a clause in Nagelsmann’s contract, which runs until 2026, regulating compensation details in the event of the 35-year-old being dismissed. As of the second year of the contract, that is to say at the end of this season, fixed severance payments come into force in the event of a parting of ways. These are staggered and are reduced in each subsequent year of the contract. Before the end of Nagelsmann’s second season in charge, any compensation would be freely negotiable. That means that a termination during the current season could prove very expensive for Bayern. According to figures from L’Equipe, Nagelsmann earns €666,000 per month at the Allianz Arena.

“We are not dealing with any other coach now. We are totally confident in Julian,” Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn told Sky Sports on Sunday. However, Nagelsmann will be well aware that his situation will probably become untenable if he fails to engineer victory on 30 September against Leverkusen.
