How things look for América ahead of the final Clausura 2023 game
Fernando Ortiz’s side are second in the table and hope to book a direct ticket to the Liguilla.
Monterrey have secured leadership of the Clausura 2023 and will qualify directly for the next round. Joining them will be the three teams who finish directly below them in the table - as things stand, those places will be contested by América, Chivas, Toluca , Pachuca and Leon. In the case of the Águilas, Tano Ortíz’s team are in the privileged position of depending on themselves to qualify directly for the sixth consecutive time.
América are guests of Juárez on Saturday night. They go into the game second in the table on 31 points, with a superior goal difference (+14) and needing either a win or a draw to secure their place in the quarter finals automatically. Even a defeat might be enough if Chivas and Toluca lose or draw and Pachuca don’t beat Querétaro by an historic scoreline.
What do América need to make the playoffs?
Mathematically, there is still a possibility that América could slip out of the top four and qualify via the playoffs, although that looks an unlikely scenario. Chivas (3rd on 31 points), Toluca (4th on 29) and Pachuca (5th on 28) are the only teams that can pass the Águilas in the general table.
For that to happen would require a combination of results: Águilas to lose to Juárez, Chivas and Toluca would need to win their respective matches (against Mazatlán and Necaxa), and Almada’s men would have to thrash Querétaro by a seven-goal margin, as América have a far better goal difference (+14 compared to +7).
When is the Clausura 2023 Liguilla?
The next round of the Liga MX Clausura 2023 will begin on Wednesday 10 May with two quarter final matches and will conclude on Sunday 28 May 28 with the final. The playoffs, between the teams who finish in places 5 to 12, will take place on 6 and 7 May.
