It’s an all Mexican affair from Puebla, Mexico as Monterrey take on Cruz Azul tonight from the Estadio BBVA. A trip to the quarterfinals is on the line in this massive match between two Liga MX rivals after Cruz Azul’s 3-2 win in the opening leg.

Monterrey

The first round opened with a tight tie against Xelaju, and struggled to get past the Guatemalan side. A 1-1 in the first leg left Monterrey with work to do in the second, but a first half goal and one to seal it from Lucas Ocampos in the 83rd advanced Monterrey on to the quarters.

Monterrey are looking to get back to the glory days in this tournament. They won it three straight years from 2011-13. It was a dominant era that was reignited in 2019 when they won their fourth and then again in 2021 when they brought home their fifth and last one.

Monterrey come into tonight sitting in ninth place in la Clausura with 4 wins, 2 draws and five losses. They are trailing the league leaders by 12 points, and will be without Anthony Martial and Fidel Ambriz. Roberto de la Rosa has two goals to lead the squad in the CCC.

Cruz Azul

The defending champions took on Vancouver FC in the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. It was a one sided tie for Cruz Azul who won the opening leg 3-0 away from home and 5-0 in the return leg.

With seven titles to their name, they are the winningest club in the history of the CCC. They won the fifth edition of this Cup back in 1969 and would go on to win the next two after that. Back to back titles in 1996 and 1997 brought glory back to Puebla de Zaragoza and then another in 2013/14. Last year they defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps for the record seventh time.

Cruz Azul have been ripping through the competition lately. They have scored 13 goals over their last five matches including 8 in the first round. They are at the top of the Clausura with 8 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss, sitting one point over Toluca, and are led by Luka Romero who has three goals in the CCC.

First leg

Cruz Azul took the early lead thanks to a 25th minute goal from Erik Lira but Monterrey answered back with two goals before the halftime break from De la Rosa. Santiago Mele picked up his second yellow in the 80th, and Cruz Azul took advantage with the equalizer from Gonzalo Pivot and the winner from Nicolas Ibañez. That sets up for a high octane second leg from Estadio BBVA.
