Update:

It’s a big one between two teams from the Pacific Northwest as two of the nine remaining MLS teams square off for a spot in the final eight of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The Seattle Sounders host the Vancouver Whitecaps from Spokane, Washington.

Sounders

The Sounders enjoyed a first round bye which granted them automatic qualification to the round of 16. Now they have to face a familiar foe in the Vancouver Whitecaps and they got a favorable result in the first leg.

Seattle have won this competition once before. That came in the 2022 season when they went all the way to the final and beat UNAM from Mexico. They are in search for number two this season, and have taken a big step to the next round of the tournament with a great first leg result.

It’s early in the MLS season but the Sounders have had a good start to the camp gain, sitting in fifth place winning three and losing one in their first four games. Paul Rothrock is the top scorer in the league with two goals while Paul Arriola scored a brace in the opening match of the CCC.

Vancouver

The Whitecaps met CS Cartagines of Costa Rica and beat the Ticos 2-0 over two legs. Their opening match gave Vancouver everything to play for in the second leg of the first round after a 0-0 draw in Costa Rica, but a 2-0 result at BC Place in Vancouver was enough to push through with goals from Kenji Cabrera Nakamura and Sebastian Berhalter.

Vancouver are relative newcomers to this tournament having participated in this compeition just one. That CCC campaign came last year when they went all the way to the final but were bested by Cruz Azul to settle with a runner up spot in their debut appearance.

After just four match days, Vancouver have ripped through the competitions winning all four matches and at the moment the Whitecaps are scoring for fun. They have scored 13 goals in their last three matches in the MLS, but were shut out in the last game in the CCC. Brian White is the talisman for Vancouver having scored 5 of their 14 goals in the league, but he has yet to appear in three matches in the CCC.

First leg

Vancouver met their first bump in the road in the first leg of the round of 16 against Seattle. A 45th minute goal by Arriola put the away side ahead and Arriola scored his brace in the 58th minute to double the advantage. A goal from Paul Rothrock in the 70th minute let Seattle breathe a little easier heading into this second leg from Spokane.
