CONTINENTAL CLÁSICO
21 MLS based players called up for ‘Continental Clásico’ USA-Mexico clash
Falling outside a FIFA window, the Continental Clásico features 21 MLS players along with Milan’s Serginho Dest and FC Juárez midfielder Alan Soñora.
The USMNT face Mexico as part of the inaugural Continental Clásico with both sides set to meet on 19 April in Glendale, Arizona. With the game not falling within the FIFA international calendar, Interim US coach Anthony Hudson has named a 23 man squad featuring 21 MLS based players along with AC Milan’s Serginho Dest and FC Juárez midfielder Alan Soñora.
The squad features 10 players from the USMNT’s squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and offers the coach a chance to evaluate a series of players ahead of the summer’s Nations League Final Four in Las Vegas in June ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup which gets underway on 24 June.
Speaking to the media upon announcing the squad Hudson stated: “We are delighted with the group we have put together. Anytime you get to play against your closest rivals it’s a special opportunity, and we have players who understand what this rivalry is all about and are ready to compete in the Continental Clásico,” adding, “It’s another chance to build on the progress we have made in the last four years and prepare for the defense of our two Concacaf titles this summer.”
