Inter Miami CF improves without Gonzalo Higuaín
The team managed by Phil Neville has won two consecutive games without the Argentina striker, who is recovering from a knee injury.
Life without Gonzalo Higuaín has been surprisingly positive for Inter Miami CF with two consecutive wins after struggling at the beginning of the season. The team owned by David Beckham started the 2022 MLS campaign with a five-game winless streak, with Higuaín scoring two penalties and providing one assist in those matches.
A mini climb up the Eastern Conference
Higuaín is recovering from a knee injury and has missed the last two games against strong opponents that are favorites to win the MLS Cup this year, New England and Seattle. Head coach Phil Neville was able to deal without the team’s captain to defeat the Revolution 3-2 and the Sounders 1-0.
“I think what you saw today was a continuation of the work that’s required to become a good team and the work that’s required to have a real clear identity,” Neville said.
“That’s two wins on the bounce now against the Eastern Conference champions and probably the best team in the Western Conference. So that should give us confidence and give us massive learning and growth to keep believing in that growth of our identity.”
Neville is confident that when Higuaín returns the level of the team will improve and they are going to score more goals. “Now it’s to keep taking it to the other level of scoring goals, attacking football, keeping our identity strong and taking baby steps forward,” Neville said. “We’ve got seven points. It’s still not enough for where we want to be or where we want to finish, so we just need consistency now in our performances and our results.”
Inter Miami has seven points in the same amount of games and they sit in 13th place in the Eastern Conference. They climbed up one spot with the two consecutive victories and their next league game will be on 24 April at home against Atlanta United and Gonzalo Higuaín is expected to return by then.
