Gonzalo Higuaín set to retire at the end of the 2022 MLS season

The father of the Inter Miami striker, Jorge Higuaín, confirmed during an interview with TNT that his son will retire at the end of the year.

Gonzalo Higuaín set to retire at the end of the 2022 MLS season

Inter Miami CF is the worst performing team right now in Major League Soccer and they sit at the bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference with one point in five fixtures. The team managed by Phil Neville has suffered four consecutive defeats and they are struggling to score goals.

Gonzalo Higuaín is set to be the leader of Inter Miami this campaign and the offense runs through him, but he has struggled to find the back of the net since arriving to MLS in 2020. The Argentina international has made 44 appearances, 42 as a starter, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists in three seasons.

Higuaín’s last season with Inter Miami

Inter Miami has tried to build a team around the 34-year-old striker, but failed to do so in their third year in Major League Soccer. Gonzalo Higuaín’s contract with the MLS side expires on 31 December and it seems that he will not return for another season according to his father, Jorge. The Argentina international is expected to retire at the end of the year without winning silverware in the United States top tier.

I don’t see him [Gonzalo] returning to Argentina. Gonzalo told me that he is going to retire from the sport at the end of the year, that’s it,” said Jorge Higuaín during an interview with TNT. “I would like to see him doing something for the sport after he retires because he has so much experience.

Gonzalo has been in many clubs and he could use that knowledge to help others. It would be sad if he doesn’t do something related to soccer. He is well respected and known in Europe, everywhere he walks people ask him for pictures and the negative comments on social media are all lies,” added Jorge.

Gonzalo Higuaín is a three-time Serie A champion with Napoli and won three LaLiga’s with Real Madrid. The Argentina international also helped Chelsea win the 2019 Europa League, but is having a hard time leading Inter Miami to make a push for the MLS Cup since arriving to the league in 2020.
