Inter Miami forward Leonardo Campana is set to return to the Ecuador national team after La Tri announced that the striker has been called up by head coach Félix Sánchez Bas.

Campana was not initially considered by the Catalan coach, however, he ended up being included as fellow forward Enner Valencia was ruled out through injury.

“The Ecuadorian Football Federation announces that by decision of the coaching staff led by Félix Sánchez Bas, Leonardo Campana will join La Tri for the games in November,” read the statement.

MLS record

Campana scored nine goals during the MLS regular season, and he contributed two more goals in the US Open Cup, both in the semi-final clash against FC Cincinnati.

Since his arrival at Inter Miami, he has scored 23 goals, putting him just six goals shy of being the all-time top goalscorer, a position that still belongs to Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, who scored 29 goals during his time in Florida.

Another chance for Campana

After not being considered for his country in September and October, the former Wolves striker, who now shares a dressing room with Lionel Messi, wants to prove his worth with the national team.

Campana’s last game for Ecuador came on 18 June 2023, when they played a friendly match against Bolivia, in which they won by the narrowest of margins.

Despite starring in the South American Under-20 tournament on the road to the World Cup in Poland 2019, where he scored six goals, he has yet to score his first goal for his country’s senior team.
