History was made on Tuesday evening as Arsenal clinched the Premier League title for the first time since the 2003/04 season. After three consecutive second-place finishes Mikel Arteta’s team have finally reached the promised land.
The Gunners were not on the field for the decisive moment; Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Bournemouth was enough to crown Arsenal champions. Nevertheless, the celebrations were in full swing at Arsenal’s London Colney training center on Tuesday as the club finally ends a 22-year wait for the title.
A lot of time has passed since Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ clinched the Premier League title with a draw against Tottenham Hotspur on 25 April 2004. Here’s a look at a few things that have happened since the Gunners were last crowned champions...
May 2004 - Porto win the Champions League
Coming from nowhere, Portuguese side FC Porto stunned European soccer’s giants to bag the biggest prize on the continent. A well-disciplined and entertaining team were crowned European champions, led by enigmatic young manager Jose Mourinho.
October 2004 - Red Sox end World Series wait
After 86 years, one of the longest droughts in the history of professional sports was ended in Chicago. The legendary ‘Curse of the Bambino’ had hung over the Chicago Red Sox since 1918, shortly before Babe Ruth - ‘The Bambino’ - was traded to the New York Yankees.
November 2004 - Nintendo DS launched
At the time of Arsenal’s last title win, the latest cutting-edge development in the world of video games was... a stylus. The Nintendo DS was a commercial sensation and opened the world of gaming to new audiences, selling 154 million units and becoming the third best-selling console of all time.
February 2005 - YouTube founded
Before Tuesday’s triumph, Arsenal’s most recent Premier League title came in a pre-YouTube world. The world’s second-most visited website now has more than 2.7 billion monthly users and more than 14 billion videos have been uploaded to the site.
March 2005 - The Office US debuts
It might be hard to imagine now, but there was once a world before Michael Scott and Dunder Mifflin. The long-running mockumentary sitcom first aired in March 2005 and ran for a total of 201 episodes. The show racked up five Primetime Emmy Awards and was named as one of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time by Rolling Stone.
July 2006 - Italy win the World Cup
In the history of sport, there are few more iconic moment than Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt on Marco Matarazzi in the final of the 2006 World Cup. That outburst was to be Zidane’s last action of a stellar career and Italy went on to lift the World Cup for a fourth time, reiterating their status as one of soccer’s global giants.
January 2007 - Apple unveil the iPhone
Arsenal’s most recent Premier League title also came in a pre-iPhone world, before touchscreens were omnipresent and ‘app’ was a part of the everyday vocabulary. Apple has now released 17 different versions of the flagship iPhone; Arsenal have added one more Premier League title.
