Is Thiago’s time at Liverpool up?
With Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai signing for Liverpool, it could be the beginning of the end for Thiago.
Thiago Alcántara has entered the final year of his contract with Liverpool and, contract situation aside, the midfielder faces a tricky scenario at Anfield. After a difficult season both collectively - Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League - and personally - injuries in February and April meant he was unable to help the team in the closing stages of the season - the 32-year-old could have his days with the Reds numbered.
GOAL’s Neil Jones reports in Covering Liverpool that “Liverpool could soon have to make an important decision on Thiago Alcántara’s future, with Fenerbahce one of the clubs considering a move for the Spain international”.
Szoboszlai signs
The Spanish midfielder’s contract with the Anfield outfit expires in June 2024. The Reds have also made two additions so far this summer that could take the spotlight away from Thiago.
Jürgen Klopp’s side recently made the signing of reigning World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister and Liverpool have just announced the arrival of Dominik Szoboszlai. Between the Argentinian and the Hungarian, aged 24 and 22 respectively, the Reds have invested more than $120 million.
Thiago, an important member of the German coach’s squad during the three seasons he has been in the north of England, has been hit by injuries. The 2021-22 season saw him play 39 games and have 26 starts, in what was his best season. The signings made ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, as well as Stefan Bajcetic and Curtis Jones, leave Thiago down the pecking order.
Milner leaves
Although the Reds released midfielders James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the end of their respective contracts on 30 June, others including Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott remain. The experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, tested by both Klopp and Gareth Southgate with England, has worked and could be continued next season.
