Speculation is on the rise at Borussia Dortmund where rumours continue about Jadon Sancho’s possible return this summer. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl is in permanent contact with the representatives of the Manchester United winger, according to reports published in German newspaper Bild today. Another prestigious publication, Süddeutsche Zeitung, recently claimed that Sancho is keen to return to Dortmund on loan.

The 23-year-old winger signed for United on a €85 million deal in 2021 following four hugely successful years at Signal Iduna Park. However Sancho, an England international, has rarely impressed during his two seasons at Old Trafford. According to current manager, Erik ten Hag, the player missed several weeks of first team action between November and the start of the New Year because of “physical and mental problems”. Sancho was unavailable for eight Premier League games as well as ties in United’s Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Carabao Cup campaigns. He was also left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Qatar World Cup.

In total, Sancho has made 34 appearances so far this season, but just six of them in the starting XI. He has scored five goals in the Premier League and one in the Europa League.

So it’s hardly surprising that the player might be yearning for the good old days when he was playing in Germany. However, television channels Sky and Sport1 argue that Sancho’s return to Dortmund is currently quite unlikely. One of the reasons they give is the player’s high salary (around £262,000 per week). Dortmund would have to offer a similar wage which would make Sancho the highest earner in the squad. They also add that Borussia would probably not be convinced by the idea of taking the player back on a season-long loan.
