Jesse Marsch, who recently acknowledged that he was not considered to coach the U.S. Men’s National Team prior to Gregg Berhalter’s return—despite being a fan favourite for the role—spoke in an interview with CBS Sports Golazo podcast Call it What You Want. He discussed Canada’s upcoming match against Team USA and the changes his side will face in their rivalry this Saturday.

Despite the controversy within the USMNT over continuing with Berhalter, which eventually led to his departure, Marsch has since taken charge of Canada, guiding them to a fourth-place finish in the Copa América. In the interview, the former Leeds United coach shared his perspective on the current atmosphere within the USMNT as they anticipate the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.

Before last Saturday’s game, Marsch stirred things up by pointing out that some of the players who had advocated for Berhalter’s return are now backing a change with the anticipated arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.

Many of the players who wanted Gregg Berhalter to return are the same ones now pushing for a fresh start and supporting changes in the U.S. national team,” Marsch said in the Call it What You Want podcast.

Jesse Marsch praised the qualities Pochettino will bring to the USMNT, stating that his arrival will benefit and elevate the players—something he believes the U.S. team has lacked under Gregg Berhalter in recent years.

Pochettino is a great coach. One of his strengths is his flexibility—he’s pragmatic and always looks to get the best out of his teams and players. He’s not committed to a single system and adapts to various styles of play. He’s been able to bring out great performances from his players, which has led to winning results. I’m optimistic that he will have a positive impact on the team and on the sport in the U.S.,” Marsch explained.
