Jozy Altidore says the 2014 USMNT would beat the current generation of players
The former striker compared the two sides and said that the 2014 squad would get the better of Christian Pulisic and co.
The current generation of players are set to become the greatest USMNT squad of all time, given that Gregg Berhalter’s side have not yet reached the heights that their potential hints at. However, with the World Cup 2026 on the horizon, one that will be played on home soil, the side looks ready to surpass those who have come before them and claim the crown of the best US team ever.
In an interview with CBS Sports, ex-Team USA striker, Jozy Altidore, assured that despite the greater individual quality that the USMNT has now compared to the past, the generation of which he formed a part in the 2014 World Cup was, player for player, a superior team.
Altidore’s generation ‘more complete’ than today’s squad
Altidore hypothesised that were the two sides to play each other today, his team would win.
“Better is a weird word”, he said when asked which squad was the best, “more complete, I would say our generation (2014) in terms of position for position. Better talent-wise, individually, I would say this (2023) one now, but not everywhere, in certain spots.”
“If the two sides played each other at full strength”, he added, “I think ours would win.”
