He may have endured final day heartbreak but Jude Bellingham has enjoyed a stellar campaign in the German top flight and he has been voted the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season.
The 19-year-old midfielder was the defining figure in a team that came agonisingly close to lifting the Bundesliga for the first time since 2012. Bellingham’s absence through injury for the crucial final game of the season only served to highlight his importance to the team.
Bellingham made 31 league appearances for Dortmund this season, contributing eight goals and five assists during that time. He even captained the team on occasion, an incredible feat for a teenager in one of Europe’s elite leagues.
In a recent interview Bellingham paid tribute to those around him for his incredible rise.
“My teammates, the coaches and the staff have helped me to develop,” he said. “I came to the club as a talented lad, but I have added elements to my game that have taken it to the next level and I think that’s down to them, mainly.
How much will Jude Bellingham cost this summer?
Bellingham made the switch to Germany in the summer of 2020 and immediately made an impact. He started the first game of Dortmund’s 2020/21 season at the age of 17 and 77 days. He scored within half an hour, becoming the club’s youngest ever scorer.
After three years in Germany he has established himself as one of the most talented young players in world football, receiving 24 caps for England in that time.
Despite his young age there is a sense that he is ready to move to one of football’s truly elite clubs and Real Madrid are thought to be in pole position to swoop.
AS sources report that the German club have been holding out for at least €150 million guaranteed. Madrid are currently hoping to get the youngster for around €100 million, with a further €20-30 million in variables.
Such is the interest in Bellingham - Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all keen on a deal - Dortmund will be confident of getting close to their target figure for this generational talent.
Will the Bundesliga Player of the Year award affect Bellingham’s transfer value? No one in football is in any doubt about the player’s ability, but it might serve to strengthen Dortmund’s negotiating position when they meet with suitors.
